Retell alternatives:what to switch to, and what follows you
We grade production calls on Retell and on the platforms people move to. Here is who each alternative fits, and which failures stay with the agent when you switch.
Retell alternatives, side by side
Each of these is in production use. They differ in how much of the stack you own and who the workflow is built for. Features as of October 2026 — check each vendor's docs before you commit.
| How you build | Best fit | Watch for | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vapi | API-first Assistants and Squads; you choose the transcriber, LLM, and voice from many providers. | Engineering teams that want to own every component. | Silent tool-call failures, and Squad handoffs that drop context. |
| Bland | Conversational pathways: node-based call flows, phone-first. | Teams that like flow-based design and run lots of phone calls. | Pathway dead-ends and transfers that never trigger. |
| ElevenLabs Agents | Agents built around ElevenLabs voices and models, with tools and a knowledge base. | Teams where voice quality is the product. | A natural voice that hides wrong answers and skipped steps. |
| LiveKit Agents | Open-source framework (Apache 2.0) in Python or Node.js, on LiveKit Cloud or self-hosted. | Teams that have outgrown a flow builder and want the pipeline in code. | Turn-taking and interruption errors; you maintain more yourself. |
| Pipecat | Open-source Python framework (BSD-2) built from pipelines of AI services, self-hosted or on Pipecat Cloud. | Python teams composing best-of-breed services. | Pipeline changes that regress old behavior; no managed call review. |
| Telnyx Voice AI | AI assistants running on Telnyx's own telephony network. | Teams that want carrier and agent from one vendor. | Telephony faults mistaken for agent faults, and the reverse. |
Why teams look for a Retell alternative
These are the reasons we hear. Most are about control and cost shape, not about Retell being broken.
You've outgrown the flow builder
Flows encode the happy path. When calls need logic a node graph handles awkwardly, teams move toward code-first platforms like Vapi, or frameworks like LiveKit Agents and Pipecat.
You want to own more of the stack
Retell manages more of the pipeline, which is the point. Teams that want to choose every provider, or bring their own models, look at Vapi or an open-source framework.
Cost is hard to predict
Retell's per-minute rate is assembled from the voice infrastructure, LLM, voice, and telephony you select, and flow agents are billed by time in each node. Price your actual flow, and compare it with the alternatives on the same configuration.
Telephony and voice are the priority
If the carrier relationship or the voice itself is what matters, Telnyx Voice AI and ElevenLabs Agents start from that end of the stack.
Before you switch, baseline what's failing now
Step 01
Connect Retell first
Paste your Retell API key. Zelto ingests every completed call — recording, transcript, metadata — with no changes to your agents or flows.
Step 02
Find what actually fails
Calls that fail for the same reason become one Finding, ranked by volume. Some are platform problems. Many are prompt and flow problems that will follow you to any platform.
Step 03
Compare the new build
Run a share of traffic on the new platform. Zelto grades both sides with the same rubric, so you can see whether the new build fails less, or just differently, before you cut over.
